Giving the students some control over lesson content

By | April 21, 2016

It’s getting towards exam time and the students have a lot to think about. They are surely regretting their earlier laziness and are now ankle deep in catch up exercises and walk around the place with a look of panic. The parents’ meeting last weekend was indicative of the importance of the various subjects not just in our school but throughout the country. The humanites faculty might not have even bothered showing up whereas the science teachers had long queues of concerned parents (with their even more worried kids) snaking down the corridor.

IMG_0069I had a total of zero parents to chat to but was still forced to sit at an empty desk looking lonely and unloved for 2 hours. I can think of better ways of wasting two hours of a warm spring Sunday afternoon!

Anyway I decided that, as we don’t have many lessons left, I should ask the students which area they felt they needed more practice in. And just for laughs I put two ‘stupid’ and ‘humorous’ options on the board too. I gave them all a marker pen and they had to come up and vote.

Well, you can see the result. Nobody wanted grammar, listening, speaking, reading writing or even English games. Two votes for vocabulary were eclipsed by a huge vote for ‘watch pointless videos’ which was in turn insignificant next to the majority of votes for ‘Do nothing’.

So my life is going to be easy for the next few weeks and their English will not improve. Hey Ho.
