Demolition Derby

I often get on the wrong bus and couldn’t understand why I could get ON the number 15 bus at the office and get OFF at Taiping Bei lu but could get on the same bus and get to my office. It always takes me to Confucius Temple and I have to walk miles to get back. Yesterday Isobel said “Be careful of the numbert 15, there are two routes”. So now the mystery is solved.

Anyway yesterday I found myself walking back from the temple to my office when I came across a demolition of an old building. This is not uncommon here where everything old chucks knocked down in favour of shiny new apartment blocks and office buildings. The residents have no say in it at all. Demonstrations are not tolerated.
I wanted to watch the demolition because the crane seemed to be knocking huge amount of debris into the road and on the pavement disregarding the presence of drivers and pedestrians as if there were none. Several times there was a near miss. So I got myself a coffee at the Sharing Commune Cafe (it comes with sugar, there is no choice!) and sat down outside to watch the fun.

After 20 minutes I was ready to carry on walking but then I saw a woman who, with no regard to her safety clambered up the pile of rubble and started hurling rocks at the crane and shouting. A street cleaner went to rescue her but she continued to shout and throw bricks. The crane left. She seemed completely distraught. I wondered what had so upset her – was it her house they were knocking down, was it her shop? Who knows. But good luck to her for speaking out, even if it is pointless, at least she has a voice.
